EN - Super Nintendo Entertainment System (also known as the Super NES, SNES or Super Nintendo) is a 16-bit video game console, developed by Nintendo which was released in 1990 in Japan, 1991 in the United States, 1992 in Europe and Australasia (Oceania), and South America in 1993. In Japan, the system is called the Super Famicom, officially adopting the abbreviated name of its predecessor, the Family Computer, or SFC. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System is the second Nintendo console, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was the first. The SNES features advanced graphics and sound capabilities compared to the other consoles of the time. In addition, the development of a variety of enhancement chips (which were integrated into games circuit boards) helped keep the SNES competitive in the marketplace. While three-dimensional artwork seldom had been seen before in home consoles, the SNES uses the Super FX chip that began with the game Star Fox in 1993.
